About North Vernon

North Vernon is the largest city in Jennings County, with 6,608 residents counted in the 2020 census. It developed in the 1850s at the crossing of the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad and the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad, about two miles north of the county seat at Vernon. Colonel Hagerman Tripp and Hiram Prather acquired about 250 acres and platted the junction settlement in 1854. Originally called Tripton, it incorporated as North Vernon in 1867. The city's Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
