Northbrook offers an impressive park district alongside some surprisingly unique sports traditions. The modern Techny Prairie Activity Center is surrounded by walking trails and restored open prairie, while neighborhood parks provide playgrounds, sports fields, and golf courses. Cycling enthusiasts will love Meadowhill Park, home to the historic Ed Rudolph Velodrome where you can watch fast-paced track races or take a spin on the banked oval yourself. The community has a rich local history that started in the nineteenth century as a rail stop called Shermerville, famous for supplying bricks to rebuild Chicago after the 1871 fire. Residents renamed the town Northbrook in 1923 after the branches of the Chicago River winding through the area, and rapid postwar growth quickly established it as a premier North Shore suburb. Today, newcomers are drawn by top-tier public schools, safe tree-lined neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community pride that keeps the village connected to its roots.
