About Northeast Harbor

Northeast Harbor is a village on Mount Desert Island, in the town of Mount Desert, where the harbor is as important to the address as the land. Somes and Richardson settlers arrived around 1761, and the inlet kept its working connection to fishing and lobstering even as the village became a summer resort. By the late nineteenth century, Philadelphia families were arriving in such numbers that the place picked up the nickname "Philadelphia on the rocks." The Rockefeller family's summer presence added another layer to a resort history that has always mixed local work with seasonal wealth.

The garden story is just as strong. Asticou Azalea Garden and Thuya Garden sit among a wider network of protected Mount Desert landscapes, and the Land & Garden Preserve grew from early private efforts to keep those grounds open and cared for. Main Street carries shops and restaurants, while the harbor still handles boats and winter working-water needs. The Asticou Hotel belongs to the older resort chapter, and the town office gives Northeast Harbor a year-round civic role alongside its seasonal rhythms. It is a place where a marina, old resort hotels, preserved gardens, and lobster boats share the same few miles.
