Norwood, MO

Norwood is a Wright County city on the southern edge of Missouri’s Salem Plateau, in the Ozarks where the White River tributaries drain south. The city was laid out in 1882, and its name came from Henry Ward Beecher’s novel Norwood: or, Village Life in New England. The 2020 census counted 578 residents. U.S. Route 60 passes through town, with Routes C, PP, and E branching into the surrounding country.

Norwood R-I School District handles public education, making the city a school center for nearby roads and rural homes. The town’s setting is part of its character: the Salem Plateau meets the White River country, and the highway provides the long east-west connection across the Ozarks. Norwood is small enough for its founding date and namesake to remain part of the everyday story, but it also sits within a much larger landscape of forests, farms, and tributary valleys. The result is a practical Missouri town with a literary name and a distinctly Ozark map.
