Oak Grove CDP (Sumner County), TN

Oak Grove is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Sumner County, with State Highway 52 running through the middle of its story. It sits about halfway between Portland and Westmoreland, north of Gallatin and south of the Kentucky line. The older local history describes a community organized around a Presbyterian church, country stores, a school, and the practical trades that kept a rural crossroads moving. There were blacksmiths, gristmill operators, carpenters, doctors, a garage, barber shops, and storekeepers, so the place had a surprisingly full working map for such a small community.

Oak Grove’s character comes from that road-and-community combination. The entrance sign said “Oak Grove Unincorporated,” and the place grew through the people who traveled between nearby communities, worked the farms, kept the stores, attended church, and used the highway toward Portland, Westmoreland, or Gallatin. The church and cemetery carry the strongest local continuity, while the old list of trades gives the crossroads its texture.
