About Oakfield

Oakfield has two layers to keep straight: the town in Genesee County and the village inside it. The first settlers arrived in 1801, while the older Seneca landscape is marked by earthworks and a name translated as “double fortified town.” Oak Orchard Creek crosses the north part of the town, giving the place a natural line toward the county’s wetland country. The village later became the local center, with NY 63 running through it and the Oakfield Historical Society keeping the area’s stories in circulation. The quick read is a small western New York place where Native history, early settlement, creek geography, and the village-town split all sit close together.
