About Oakland

Oakland is a Pottawattamie County city along the West Nishnabotna River, first known as Big Grove. The railroad arrived in 1880, and the town's story still shows up in the Nishna Heritage Museum and its collection of older buildings. Riverside Community School District now links Oakland with the surrounding countryside, but the river remains the cleanest way to place it. Oakland is southwest Iowa in a Big Grove-to-railroad shape, with the museum keeping the older name in view.
