About Oakland
Oakland is a Burt County city with a name tied to early settler John Oak, while its deeper local story is Swedish: immigrants from Dalsland settled along Logan Creek in 1864. The city still carries that heritage through its Swedish Festival and the Swedish Heritage Center, housed in a former Swedish Covenant Church. The Burt County Fair has been held in Oakland since 1913. Oakland is a Nebraska place where one settler supplied the name and a later immigrant community supplied much of the local story.
