Oakwood, IL

Oakwood is a Vermilion County village whose story starts with water, salt, and the Vermilion River. Kickapoo and Potawatomi people lived in the area and used the salt springs before French observers documented the salty water in 1706. Settlers came to work the salt mines in the 1820s, then the railroad arrived from Indianapolis toward Bloomington in 1870-71 and Oakwood was platted soon after. The salt industry faded when coal became the more profitable local fuel, but the old salt kettle still stands at the I-74 rest area as a roadside reminder.

Today Oakwood sits in the Danville metro with Oakwood CUSD 76 serving local students and US 150 carrying traffic along the village's edge. The Vermilion River and Salt Fork give the area its water map, while Danville supplies many larger services a short drive away. Village Hall, the school district, churches, and highway access make the place easy to read on a trip through eastern Illinois. Oakwood has a layered local story: Indigenous stewardship, salt works, rail lines, coal, and a modern school community built around the same river country.
