Oatman, AZ

Oatman is a census-designated place in the Black Mountains of Mohave County, Arizona, at an elevation of 2,710 feet. The community began as a mining camp in 1915 when two prospectors struck ten million dollars in gold, and its population swelled to more than 3,500 within a year. The town is named for Olive Oatman, an Illinois girl captured by Native Americans in 1851 during her family's westward migration; she was later traded to the Mohave people, who adopted her and tattooed her face. The 2020 census recorded a population of 102.
