Oberlin, KS

Oberlin is Decatur County’s seat, a northwest Kansas town platted in 1878 and named for Oberlin, Ohio. The town sits amid open prairie, wheat country, and the broad weather of the High Plains, with Route 36 and county roads making it a familiar stop across the county. Its history includes the September 1878 attack during the Northern Cheyenne Exodus, remembered locally through the Last Indian Raid Museum and a monument in the town cemetery. That story is part of a larger frontier record, and the museum works through it with buildings, objects, and accounts from Decatur County’s early years.

Today Oberlin’s local map is built for both town errands and wide-open recreation. The Decatur County Museum and Last Indian Raid Museum complex has a collection of historic buildings, while Oberlin City Park brings a pool, band shell, basketball court, playground, and picnic shelter close to Decatur Community High School. Sappa Park lies east of town with trails through the prairie. The feel is county-seat practical: grab supplies, meet someone at the park, walk through the museum grounds, then head back out into the long roads and low horizons of northwest Kansas.
