Oblong, IL

Oblong is a Crawford County village in southeastern Illinois, named for the naturally oblong prairie where early settlers established farms. Incorporated in 1883, the village grew in the Illinois Basin's oil country, where drilling, leases, and field roads brought a short but significant boom around the beginning of the twentieth century. The name still feels unusually literal on a map of flat prairie, small creeks, and farm ground.

The Illinois Oil Field Museum in the village keeps that industrial chapter visible through early equipment, records, photographs, and local stories. Oblong Community Unit School District serves students through grade school and high school, while Main Street businesses, churches, and village services support the surrounding countryside. The village sits within driving distance of Robinson, Palestine, and other Crawford County communities, with oil history adding a distinctive layer to ordinary farm-town life. Oblong is a place where a shape on the prairie became a town name and an oil field became a museum.
