Oceanside, NY

Oceanside sits tucked behind the Long Beach barrier island, buffered from the open Atlantic by a network of tidal channels, creeks, and salt marshes. For commuters, the Long Island Rail Road runs through town along the Long Beach Branch, providing a direct ride of roughly forty-five minutes into Penn Station or Grand Central. Living alongside these coastal waterways gives many neighborhoods a relaxed maritime feel, though low-lying areas near the water also require some mindfulness during stormy high tides.

Long Beach Road serves as the community's primary commercial corridor, filled with everyday shopping plazas, grocery stores, local pizzerias, and casual diners. The avenue also has a fun connection to New York food history: Nathan's Famous chose Oceanside for its very first location outside Coney Island in 1955, and the landmark spot remains open today. The hamlet evolved across several eras over the centuries, growing from early Munsee Lenape homelands and colonial Christian Hook into the established suburban town it is today.

The Oceanside Library on Davison Avenue is one of the most active gathering spots in the community. When its newly constructed building opened, local residents celebrated by forming a neighborhood book brigade to pass volumes by hand from the old site into the new space. The modern facility includes a performance theater, podcast recording studios, a hands-on discovery lab for kids, and dedicated study rooms. It regularly hosts children's programs, craft workshops, lectures, and club meetups throughout the week.

Outdoor recreation in southern Oceanside centers around two popular waterfront properties. Oceanside Park on Mahlon Brower Drive is the main destination for sports and family activities, featuring athletic fields, tennis courts, a municipal pool, a roller hockey rink, and a dog park. Further south on Slice Drive, the Marine Nature Study Area protects 52 acres of peaceful salt marsh. Elevated wooden boardwalks, observation decks, and an interpretive nature center make it a great place to spot coastal birds and enjoy wide views across Middle Bay.
