Oden, AR

Set along the north bank of the Ouachita River in western Arkansas, Oden is a quiet, close-knit town about eight miles west of Mount Ida. First settled in the mid-1800s by farming families, the community grew into a bustling trading post with its own shops and bank before a 1930s fire and changing economic times scaled things back. Today, Oden offers a peaceful rural setting with open pasture, dense timber, and deep roots in Montgomery County.

Life here revolves around the outdoors and the local community. The Ouachita National Forest and the Big Brushy recreation area are right next door, offering plenty of spots for hiking, camping, and fishing along the river. The local public school serves as the town's main gathering place and primary employer, while historic landmarks like the native-stone Oden Bank building stand alongside the post office and neighborhood churches. Each spring, the town also welcomes cyclists from all over for the start of the annual Ouachita Challenge mountain bike race.
