Okarche, OK

Okarche is a Canadian and Kingfisher county town northwest of Oklahoma City, with U.S. 81 running along its regional edge. The 2020 census counted 1,141 residents. Cattle once moved through this country on the Chisholm Trail, and German immigrants later gave the town a strong cultural imprint; by 1902, German was the official language in four local churches and a mutual insurance society. Okarche sits on ground that was part of Wichita homeland before 1830 and later fell within territory assigned to Creek and Seminole people during removal.

Eischen’s Bar is the local landmark that needs no introduction once you know the town. Peter Eischen opened the saloon in 1896, it closed during Prohibition, reopened afterward, and survived a 1993 fire with part of its old Spanish-carved back bar intact. The bar’s fried chicken made Okarche a regional stop, but the town’s story is larger than one building: tribal history, German settlement, cattle trails, U.S. 81, and the Oklahoma City orbit all meet here.
