About Okolona

Okolona is one of Chickasaw County's two seats, a north Mississippi city whose story runs through railroads, commerce, and Black education. It began as Rose Hill, changed names when a post office exposed a conflict, and later became home to Okolona College, founded in 1902 as an industrial and teacher-training school. The college served generations of Black students before closing in 1965, and its campus now sits within the Okolona College Historic District. U.S. 45A and Highway 32 keep the town tied to the regional road map.
