Old Bennington, VT

Old Bennington is a village in the town of Bennington, Vermont, on a hill above downtown and along Vermont Route 9. The village and surrounding area form the Old Bennington Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1984. Revolutionary War-era homes, the Old First Church, and the Bennington Battle Monument give the place a strongly layered map. The district's boundaries follow roads, the former Rutland railroad bed, and nearby residential streets.

The settlement is tied to some of Vermont's earliest history. Samuel Robinson established a cabin in the area in 1761, and the first meetinghouse of the town's Congregational congregation followed in the early nineteenth century. The Old First Church, built in 1805-06, faces the village green, while the monument commemorates the 1777 Battle of Bennington, fought across the state line in New York. Route 9 leads east to downtown Bennington and west toward New York. Old Bennington's streets, church, green, monument, and preserved homes keep the early settlement visible as part of the larger Bennington town map.
