Old Greenwich, CT

Greenwich Point connects Old Greenwich's earliest recorded land history with a 147-acre public recreation site. The 1640 deed records the peninsula's Indigenous name as Monakewego; it later became Elizabeth's Neck after Elizabeth Winthrop Feake made a separate land purchase there during the English settlement of what became Greenwich. The eastern village took the name Sound Beach when trains began stopping in 1872, a choice intended to attract summer visitors, before adopting Old Greenwich in 1931. Today it remains a neighborhood within the Town of Greenwich rather than a separate municipality. The Old Greenwich census-designated place had 6,962 residents in 2020, and its station remains a stop on Metro-North's New Haven Line. Greenwich Point Park, Binney Park, and Perrot Memorial Library provide three distinct neighborhood destinations. Greenwich Point, also known as Tod's Point, covers 147.3 town-owned acres with a beach, swimming and saltwater-fishing areas, walking trails, picnic grounds, a boat yard, and launches for boats and kayaks.

Historic estate structures remain on the grounds, including Innis Arden Cottage, now home to an environmental center. Entry requires a park pass or ticket from May through October, an important distinction from unrestricted shoreline access. Inland, 33-acre Binney Park combines a pond, walking track, playground, tennis courts, athletic fields, stone bridges, and a gazebo. Edwin Binney donated its original land, and the park was dedicated in 1933. For summer 2026, the town scheduled Independence Day fireworks at both parks and a Sound Beach Community Band concert at Binney. Across Sound Beach Avenue, Perrot Memorial Library has served Old Greenwich since descendants of local schoolmaster John Perrot founded it in 1904. The independent institution provides current collections, children's programs, and community events while also functioning as a designated town warming and cooling center during extreme weather.
