About Olive Hill

Olive Hill is a Carter County city that moved downhill, in a way. The Henderson brothers started a rural trading post in the early 1800s, but when the railroad reached Tygarts Creek in 1881, the town shifted from the hillside now called Old Olive Hill into the creek valley. That rail connection helped local hardwood, firebrick, and stone reach wider markets. Today Tygarts Creek runs through downtown, with the old depot trailhead and campground marking the town's outdoor side. Olive Hill is eastern Kentucky in a creek-and-railroad shape.
