Oliver, WI

Oliver is a Douglas County village of 423 residents in the 2020 census, tucked along the St. Louis River between Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota. The river once offered a canoe-route resting point called Bear's First Pause, but the modern village grew around workers crossing toward the Morgan Park steel plant. Oliver incorporated on February 24, 1917; its post office had opened in 1912, and village hall and jail were in place by 1913.

The Oliver Bridge, built in 1910 and later fitted with a road deck, connected the village to Gary-New Duluth and let workers walk toward the steel works. Highway 105 now carries the main traffic, while the cleaned-up river and thousands of acres of public land draw attention back to the landscape. Sewers and new homes helped the village expand in the 1990s, but the bridge, river, and industrial history remain the organizing lines. Oliver is a Wisconsin border village with its feet in two states and its story in the water.
