Olpe, KS

Olpe is a Lyon County city on Kansas 99, best known well beyond town for a dining landmark. The Olpe Chicken House began as Cooper's Cafe in 1934, was purchased by Leonard and Theresa Coble in 1958, and became the place people associate with the city. A full chicken dinner once cost 65 cents; the restaurant later survived a 1974 lightning fire and reopened in a larger building in 1975. It has also served as an informal civic room, hosting governors, state representatives, and locals at the same tables.

The restaurant is part of a broader town pattern built around school, road, and congregation ties. Olpe Elementary grew out of the former Harmony Hill one-room school, and the city is served by Southern Lyon County USD 252.
