Onarga, IL

Onarga is an Iroquois County village laid out beside the railroad from Chicago in the mid-nineteenth century. Spring Creek helped make the area one of the county's early settled spots, while US 45 later took over the through-travel role, running north to Gilman and south toward Buckley. The village sits in western Iroquois County with a classic railroad-and-highway outline: older homes and businesses around the center, farm roads radiating out, and the larger Kankakee-Iroquois region just beyond.

The local recreation map is bigger than the population suggests. Onarga has Lake Arrowhead, a golf course, several restaurants, and the only movie theater in Iroquois County. Those places give the village a practical role for nearby rural residents, especially when a film or dinner means a trip into town. US 45 remains the daily spine, but Spring Creek and the former rail alignment tell the older story of why Onarga was settled here. It is a village built around movement and small-town amenities: railroad beginnings, highway traffic, water, greens, and a theater that draws people from across the county.
