Onawa, IA

Onawa is Monona County's seat, a western Iowa city of 2,906 residents in the 2020 census, on the Iowa side of the Missouri River between Council Bluffs and Sioux City. The town was platted in 1857, moved from its original river location after flooding, and reached its present site when the railway arrived in 1867. The result is a city with a very wide Main Street, a courthouse-centered core, and a river valley just beyond town. That width is the famous part, while the local texture comes from what gathers around it. The Community and Recreation Center adds a 400-seat hall, senior center, and exercise room. Lewis and Clark State Park, Preparation Canyon, and the Loess Hills State Forest extend the regional landscape west and south. Onawa's everyday map is county government, a broad main street, and institutions that make a small river city useful beyond its own population.
