Oneida, IL

Oneida is a Knox County city in western Illinois, set in Ontario Township and first platted on September 1, 1854. The early town grew around a railroad station, two grain elevators, and a small park on land donated for the station grounds. The tracks gave Oneida a reason to gather: farm products could move out, supplies could come in, and the new settlement became a center for the surrounding township.

Oneida received a special city charter in 1869, though its scale remained that of a small farm town. The old town park was described as a green spot beside the station, with trees and paths offering a pause between railroad and grain traffic. Today the city sits within the Galesburg micropolitan area and keeps its place on the western Illinois map through the same basic pattern that shaped it early on: a compact street plan, open farm country, and transportation links connecting Knox County communities.
