Oologah, OK

Oologah is a Rogers County town built on a railroad line, a Cherokee name, and the ranch country around Oologah Lake. The Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway reached the area in 1889, and the town took its name from a Cherokee chief, although older records show several spellings and translations. The 2020 census counted 1,305 residents. U.S. 169 and State Highway 88 now do the road work that the railroad once did, while the lake has reshaped the old townsite and surrounding countryside.

Will Rogers is the name most people connect with Oologah. He was born on a ranch near town in 1879, and the birthplace was moved to higher ground when Oologah Lake flooded the original site. The Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch, a replica in town, and the local historical museum keep that connection visible. Oologah-Talala Public Schools serve a broad lake-area community, with lower and upper elementary, middle, and high schools; the district’s campus sits just west of the lake. Oologah is therefore a town with several overlapping maps—Cherokee history, railroad town, Will Rogers country, lake community, and a school district that ties the surrounding roads together.
