Orangevale, CA

Orangevale sits at the northeastern edge of Sacramento County, right next door to Folsom and just south of Placer County. Because it is an unincorporated community without its own city hall, local services and parks are managed through county agencies and dedicated community districts. Greenback Lane cuts across town as the main commercial corridor, lined with grocery stores, local eateries, and everyday retail. While the eastern end near Folsom has a familiar suburban feel with convenient shopping spots, the western side leans heavily into Orangevale’s quiet, open-country character, with homes set back behind mature trees and expansive front yards.

That semi-rural charm dates back to the late nineteenth century, when the area was developed as an agricultural colony planted with citrus groves and vineyards. Even though a major freeze in 1930 wiped out most of the commercial citrus trees, the community kept its farming roots. Today, about twenty-five miles northeast of downtown Sacramento, you will still see plenty of horse pastures, backyard chicken coops, and fruit trees. Many residential properties sit on half-acre or one-acre lots, giving residents extra breathing room, while the arena at Orangevale Community Park supports an active local equestrian scene.

Longtime community hubs help maintain that close-knit feel. The Orangevale Grange has been gathering on Walnut Avenue since 1910, hosting monthly pancake breakfasts, youth programs, and a popular fireworks celebration around the Fourth of July. Down on Greenback Lane, the local library branch offers modern meeting rooms, study spaces, and dedicated areas for kids and teens. For anyone interested in local history, the volunteer-run Orangevale History Museum on Hazel Avenue displays vintage photographs and artifacts from the town’s early ranching days.

Throughout the year, neighborhood gatherings bring residents together across local parks and recreation facilities. The Orangevale Recreation & Park District manages several sports fields, playgrounds, and a community pool on Hazel Avenue. From spring through early fall, the weekly farmers market pairs fresh produce with live music and food trucks at Community Center Park on Thursday evenings. Every May, residents gather for Summer Palooza, a weekend festival and carnival tradition that has run since the 1960s.
