Oregon, MO

Oregon is Holt County’s seat, an old Missouri town in the southern half of the county where the county courthouse, museum, and Lewis & Clark Trail give the community more civic weight than its size suggests. The settlement was first platted as Finley in June 1841, then replatted as Oregon later that year. The name pointed toward the Oregon Country, then imagined as a destination for emigrants heading west. Travelers crossed the area toward the Missouri River and the old routes beyond it, while Oregon grew into the county’s administrative center.

That history sits beside a strong local sports memory. The 1928 Oregon boys’ basketball team won the Missouri state tournament and then reached the quarterfinals of a national high school tournament, an accomplishment that still belongs to the town’s identity. The Holt County Museum and Research Center keeps the surrounding county story close to the courthouse, while Forest City and Mound City lie nearby across the farm-and-river landscape. The 2020 census counted 837 residents. Oregon is a small county seat with an unusually wide horizon: pioneer roads, Missouri River country, courthouse business, and a basketball team that made the town’s name travel.
