If you are looking for local culture and community traditions, the SCERA Center for the Arts has been a centerpiece of Orem since the 1930s. Located right along State Street, it hosts everything from youth theater and art classes to movies and concerts, along with popular outdoor shows at the SCERA Shell in the summer. Just next door, the Orem Heritage Museum gives newcomers a fun, easy glimpse into the area's past. You can explore free exhibits packed with old photographs, artifacts from the region's orchard-farming days, and a vintage model train that winds through a miniature version of 1940s Orem.

Unlike many Utah cities laid out around a central historic square, Orem developed as a sprawling collection of fruit orchards and berry farms known as the Provo Bench. Early settlers spread out along irrigation canals and rail lines in the late nineteenth century, and the community grew outward from those early homesteads. Even though modern shopping plazas and quiet subdivisions have replaced the family fruit plots, that open farming history still shapes the town today, giving Orem wide neighborhood blocks and a layout centered along State Street.

State Street serves as the main north-south commercial artery, packed with grocery stores, local eateries, car dealerships, and everyday services. Intersecting it near the south end is University Parkway, which brings you to University Place mall, movie theaters, and a steady stream of dining spots. Across town, geography makes navigation simple. The city sits tucked between the eastern shores of Utah Lake and the dramatic mountain backdrop of Mount Timpanogos. You will find industrial zones and newer business parks out toward Geneva Road on the west side, while pleasant residential neighborhoods climb toward the foothills on the east.

As the largest public university in Utah, Utah Valley University brings plenty of energy and economic vitality to the area. The sprawling campus sits right off Interstate 15 and University Parkway, drawing tens of thousands of students for classes, collegiate sports, arts performances, and community events. The university presence also gives Orem great transit connections. The Utah Valley Express, a free rapid-transit bus line, easily connects the Orem FrontRunner commuter rail station to the UVU campus, University Place mall, and neighboring BYU in Provo, making it simple to get around the valley without a car.
