About Orick

Orick sits along Redwood Creek in Humboldt County, 43 miles north of Eureka and close to the Pacific. The name comes from the Yurok O’rekw, commonly rendered as “mouth of the river,” a fitting description for a community spread across the lower Redwood Creek valley. US 101 passes through town, with the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center just south along the route. Elk are a familiar sight in the open areas around town, while the redwood parks, lagoons, and coast define the wider setting.

The settlement grew around travel toward Trinity mining country and the beach-sand claims of the Gold Bluff District. Later, ranching, timber, and small roadside businesses shaped local life. Today Orick is threaded into the Redwood National and State Parks network, with the Redwood Creek Estuary Trail, Gold Bluffs Beach, Humboldt Lagoons, and sections of the California Coastal Trail nearby. Orick Elementary serves kindergarten through eighth grade, and the community’s small scale makes the surrounding forest and river impossible to ignore.
