Orient, OR

Orient is an unincorporated community and census-designated place at the junction of SE Orient Drive and 302nd Avenue in southern Multnomah County, beside Gresham and near the Clackamas County line. The 2020 census counted 462 residents. Its name comes from the Orient Mill, a steam-driven sawmill founded by Scottish immigrant Andrew MacKinnon. The mill's story also reaches into Oregon's Japanese immigrant history: MacKinnon's wife, Miyo Iwakoshi, was among the earliest Japanese settlers in the Gresham area. Orient's present-day map is defined by its roads, former post-office location, and proximity to Gresham's larger civic and commercial network. The community sits in the transition between the Portland metro suburb and the rural lands of east Multnomah County; the surrounding area retains the settlement pattern that once joined mills, farms, and small post offices.

Gresham's historical record places the Orient Mill east of the city and links it to the farming communities that developed around the mill. For a prospective resident, the key distinction is scale and setting: Orient is a small named community within a much larger regional system, with its most memorable local story carried by a sawmill, a road junction, and the Iwakoshi family's place in Oregon history.
