About Orogrande

Orogrande is an Otero County census-designated place on U.S. 54 in the Jarilla Mountains. The 2020 Census counted 35 residents and 32 housing units. Jarilla Junction began as a railroad stop in 1897; after a 1905 gold discovery, the town took the Orogrande name and drew a rush that soon faded when the deposits disappointed investors. Geological research still treats the surrounding district as a mineralized landscape with gold, copper, turquoise, and other deposits. County mapping places the community beside U.S. 54 and the Fort Bliss Military Reservation, so mining history and military land remain visible in its geography.
