Osage City, KS

Osage City is a city in Osage County, set along the Santa Fe railroad line in east-central Kansas. The 2020 census counted 2,861 residents. The town was platted in 1869, incorporated in 1872, and named for the Osage Nation. Coal shaped its early economy, with mines feeding the railroad and helping Osage City grow into the county's main rail-and-mining center. The depot and coal fields are still the clearest local landmarks, and Salt Creek runs along the south side. The old Santa Fe depot still gives the center a clear landmark, while Salt Creek and the surrounding grassland open the town toward the rest of the county.

Coal production faded long ago, but the railroad geometry and old commercial blocks keep that era visible. Osage City is a Kansas place with a name that honors the land's first people, a rail line running through the middle, and a mining past that still turns up in the streets, depot, and local stories.
