Ossining, NY

Built along the steep bluffs of the Hudson River, Ossining offers dramatic water views and a rich sense of history around almost every turn. The Old Croton Aqueduct trail cuts right through the village, giving runners and dog walkers a wooded path that leads across the famous Double Arch bridge. Tucked directly beneath it is the Sing Sing Kill Greenway, a paved walkway that winds through a quiet, rocky gorge. Living here means getting used to hills, with the main commercial district sitting up top while the train station, waterfront parks, and riverbank sit down below.

Most people recognize the name Ossining because of Sing Sing, and the maximum-security facility still operates near the waterfront today. Incarcerated workers quarried local white marble to build the original 1820s cellblock, along with several historic buildings around town. Today, the village is preserving and sharing that past through the Sing Sing Prison Museum project, with a visitor center and gallery based in the historic Olive Opera House downtown. Alongside this history, everyday village life centers around friendly residential neighborhoods, local schools, and riverfront parks.

For commuters, the location is very convenient. The Metro-North Hudson Line station sits right on the water, offering scenic express rides into Grand Central in under an hour. Heading uphill from the tracks takes you into a lively downtown filled with historic architecture, independent coffee shops, and a great mix of local restaurants and bakeries. The village has also been putting state revitalization grants to work, bringing updated plazas, new residential spaces, and improved pedestrian links between the hilltop shops and the waterfront.

Day-to-day life here revolves around the outdoors and an active community calendar. Waterfront spots like Louis Engel Park and Henry Gourdine Park are popular for picnics, summer concerts, food truck nights, and sunset strolls along the river. Up in Market Square, the Saturday Down to Earth Farmers Market brings neighbors together for fresh produce and prepared foods, while the public library and community center host activities for all ages. It is a scenic, grounded Westchester river town with easy transit and a distinct character.
