Ossipee, NC

Ossipee is a town in northwestern Alamance County, one of North Carolina's newer municipalities. It incorporated on December 9, 2002, after operating as a sanitary district for 16 years; before incorporation it formed part of the Altamahaw-Ossipee census-designated place. The 2020 census counted 536 residents, and the town lies within the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area. Its location in the northwestern county places it among the rural crossroads and mill communities west of Burlington. The older mill community remains part of the town's local memory.

Ossipee's roots run back to the Haw River and the cotton economy. The Ossipee Cotton Mill was founded in 1878 by Capt. James N. Williamson and his sons, with mill houses and a store growing around the factory. Workers later struck over low wages, long hours, and the company-home arrangement, giving the community a labor history beneath its municipal one. Today the town's boundaries and government are new, while the older mill landscape still gives Ossipee its name and shape.
