The village has deep roots as the oldest established community in Will County. Originally home to indigenous Potawatomi tribes, the area drew early settlers in the late 1820s around a sawmill on the DuPage River in what was first known as Walkers’ Grove. The settlement supplied timber to help build early Chicago and served as an important stop on travel routes between Chicago and Ottawa.
