Otis, CO

Otis is a Washington County statutory town that grew out of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad's push across the Colorado plains. Railroad construction reached the area in 1882, when Otis served as a work camp, and the town was established in 1886. Local tradition connects the name with Dr. Otis, though the rail line is the firmer part of the town's early story. The first businesses and civic buildings followed the tracks and the roads that fed the surrounding farms.

Highway 34 now carries the regional traffic through Otis, while North Washington Street preserves the older main-street direction. Grain elevators, feed barns, churches, and the school belong to the agricultural pattern that replaced the temporary railroad camp with a permanent town. Farming still sets the scale of the surrounding landscape, and the town's location on the plains keeps Denver and the larger eastern Colorado service network in the background of daily life. Otis feels like a place built in stages: rail first, farm economy next, and a small civic center holding the two together.
