Otisville, NY

Otisville is a village in the Town of Mount Hope, close to the western town line in Orange County. It sits where New York Route 211 meets County Route 11, and the village functions as Mount Hope’s community center, with a Main Street commercial district and the local elementary school connection. The settlement dates to 1816 and takes its name from Isaac Otis, an early settler and merchant. That combination—an old village center on a pair of regional roads—still gives Otisville a clear place within the larger Orange County landscape.

The railroad left a deeper mark here than the village’s size might suggest. The Erie Railroad reached the area in 1846, and the Otisville Tunnel, completed in 1908, became the longest tunnel on the Metro-North commuter railroad. The Dodge-Greenleaf House, a Gothic Revival home built in 1855, is another reminder of that era; it later served as housing connected to workers building the tunnel and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Minisink Valley Central School District operates Otisville Elementary, keeping the village tied to the surrounding town. Otisville is small, but its Main Street, school, roads, and railroad history give it several sturdy points of reference.
