About Overbrook
Overbrook is an Osage County city in eastern Kansas, about twenty miles southeast of Topeka and twenty-five miles southwest of Lawrence. The 2020 census counted 1,005 residents. U.S. 56 follows the old Santa Fe Trail through town, with the public library, city pool, City Hall, Main Street businesses, and the fairgrounds clustered along the local grid. Santa Fe Trail USD 434 serves Overbrook, Carbondale, and Scranton, with the district high school about five miles west. Farming and commuting both show up in the city's daily traffic.
The Santa Fe Trail left ruts around Overbrook, including traces near the cemetery, old school grounds, and a spring once used by travelers. The city incorporated on December 28, 1948, after earlier school and farm communities had grown around the trail. A 1919 schoolhouse fire reshaped the town's school sites, and a 1961 Kansas Centennial celebration drew about 3,000 people for a day centered on trail history. Current routines are easy to picture: school buses on Highway 56, shoppers on Maple Street, the farmers market at the fairgrounds, and swimmers at the city pool when summer arrives.
