Owensville, IN

Owensville is a Gibson County town built around a square laid out by Phillip Briscoe in 1817. Early merchants turned the settlement into a trading point, and the Wabash and Erie Canal, followed by the railroad in 1879, helped the town move grain and farm goods beyond the Lower Wabash Valley. Owensville incorporated in 1881, and a fire in 1876 left a mark on the business district before the town's later brick, mill, and railroad years.

Today the town square is Owensville Library Park, home to the Carnegie library, a war memorial, and the everyday community routine that small towns build around a central green. The Owensville Carnegie Public Library keeps the old civic role visible, while local fields remain known for watermelons, pumpkins, squash, cantaloupes, and other produce. Family-owned businesses still shape the main street, with Princeton, Mount Vernon, and Evansville filling in larger errands. The Watermelon Festival carries the old farm connection into the present.
