Oxford, GA

Oxford is a Newton County city about 35 miles east of Atlanta, built around Emory’s historic campus. The 2020 census counted 2,308 residents. The Methodist Episcopal Church chartered Oxford in 1839 as the birthplace of Emory College; the town took its name from Oxford University, and it became a city in 1914. Much of the city sits inside the Oxford Historic District, where college buildings, churches, cemeteries, and residences keep the original campus-town arrangement visible. Oxford College remains the town’s main daily reference point.

It is Emory’s two-year liberal arts campus, where students begin their undergraduate years before continuing at the Atlanta campus, so the academic calendar is part of the local rhythm. The city’s own description also names forests, trails, wide boulevards, homes, churches, and schools around that college core. Oxford’s local scoop is a Georgia city whose street plan and civic identity still grow out of a college founded before the Atlanta metropolitan area reached this far east.
