About Pacolet

Pacolet is a Spartanburg County town where the Pacolet River does most of the storytelling. Before the Revolution, the area around Grindal Shoals was a crossing and staging ground; Daniel Morgan used a camp nearby in December 1780 while preparing for Cowpens, and the river later figured in the Carolina gold rush. The town's modern calendar still circles back to the water with Pacolet River Fest, held on the Flats by the river each October. There is a Black history here too: Benjamin E. Mays Consolidated School served Black students from 1953 to 1970. Pacolet is a South Carolina town with a river, a Revolutionary War route, and layers that deserve the full look.
