Palestine, IL

Palestine is a Crawford County village founded in 1811 and one of the older settled places in Illinois. The 2020 census counted 1,233 residents. Palestine became the Crawford County seat in 1818, a role it held until 1843, and the village still carries that early-government history in its streets and older buildings. A local tradition says French explorer Jean Lamotte saw the area in 1678 and chose the Palestine name because the landscape reminded him of the biblical land.

Historic preservation gives the village an active calendar. The Harper House, believed to be the oldest home in Crawford County, now serves as a museum and event space. The Fife Opera House is being restored, and the Pioneer City Heritage Trail links historic places around town. From March through November, the Fort Lamotte Rangers hold black-powder events, while the December Debutante Ball recreates a Civil War-era dance. Palestine is a small Wabash-country village where county-seat history, old houses, and recurring community events all remain part of the present-day landscape.
