Palouse, WA

Palouse is a Whitman County city of 1,015 people at the 2020 census, set among the wheat-covered hills of southeastern Washington. William Ewing settled here in 1869, W.P. Breeding laid out the townsite in 1875, and the city incorporated in 1888. The name comes from the surrounding Palouse farm region, where rolling loess hills and dryland agriculture shape the view in every direction. The Palouse River and the nearby Idaho line give the city a clear regional setting beside Pullman, Moscow, and the smaller wheat towns around them.

Downtown Palouse still carries the look of an old farm center, with historic commercial buildings, city hall, parks, and the Roy M. Chatters Newspaper and Printing Museum. The museum holds a near-complete run of Whitman County newspapers reaching back to the 1880s. Hayton-Greene Park, the city RV park, Greenwood Cemetery, and the volunteer-built Heritage Park add current landmarks around that older core. The city also has a curious place in television history: in 1974, students produced and broadcast programs through the local cable system. Palouse is a small city, but it has its own fire and emergency service, parks, city government, newspaper museum, school routines, and river corridor.
