Parachute, CO

Parachute is a Garfield County home-rule town at the confluence of Parachute Creek and the Colorado River, with I-70 running along its south side. The 2020 census counted 1,390 residents. The town sits about halfway between Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs, so the highway ties its daily map to the wider Western Slope. The name comes from the Ute word Pahchouc for the creek, reshaped by early settlers into "Parachute," and the town is also the birthplace of Willard Libby, who received the 1960 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Garfield County School District 16 serves the town with elementary, middle, and high schools. The Colorado River and Parachute Creek shape the physical setting, while I-70 carries travelers and regional traffic past the built-up streets. Current town services, schools, local businesses, and river access make Parachute a working valley town with an unusually memorable name. The name, the river junction, the interstate, and a Nobel connection all converge in the same compact place.
