Park City, MT

Park City is a Stillwater County census-designated place about 20 miles west of Billings, with the Yellowstone River south of town and sandstone cliffs to the north. The 2020 census counted 1,023 residents. Farming, especially sugar beets and corn, shares the landscape with commuters who work in Laurel or Billings. Park City has no incorporated municipal government, so the school, library, churches, fire department, and highway connections carry much of the community’s daily structure.

Alonzo Young established a Yellowstone River boat landing and a post office called Young’s Point in 1878. Settlers from Ripon, Wisconsin, arrived in 1882, planted trees, and established the Park City name. The Northern Pacific Railroad soon passed through, calling its station Rimrock, while the railroad’s major yards and shops developed in nearby Laurel. Park City kept its own name and became a farming and residential community beside the river. The town’s map still makes sense through those layers: river landing, rail corridor, school, fields, and the Billings-Laurel work belt.
