About Parkersburg

Parkersburg is Butler County's largest city even though the county seat is elsewhere, and the 2020 census counted 2,015 residents. John Connell and his son William built a log cabin here in 1857; a railroad survey followed in the early 1860s. That transportation history still shows up in Depot Park on the north side of town beside Beaver Creek. The city's three parks, municipal pool, and Legend Trail golf course give the community several distinct places to spend time outdoors.

Miracle Park on the west side carries a more recent chapter. After an EF-5 tornado destroyed the playground that stood there, residents and volunteers rebuilt the site with separate play areas, shelters, a winter ice rink, sand volleyball, and open green space. Depot Park has also been the focus of renovation work around its caboose and drainage. The Aplington-Parkersburg Community School District operates the high school after a 2004 merger joined the former Aplington and Parkersburg districts. The Kothe Memorial Library and the school campus add everyday civic and educational destinations to a town shaped by parks, rail history, and the Beaver Creek corridor.
