About Parkman

Parkman is a Sheridan County CDP along the Tongue River country, north of Sheridan and near the Montana line. Its post-office history is more complicated than the map suggests. Thurston Akins first tried to name the office Akins in 1888; the government approved Pass instead, tying the early settlement to a stage stop on the Bozeman Trail. When the Burlington railroad reached the area in 1894, the post office moved to a new station called Parkman, named for historian Francis Parkman. Today the place is marked by ranch country, the Tongue River, Parkman Daze, and the tiny Slack School - a small community with several names layered over one route north.
