Pavo, GA

Pavo is a Georgia city divided by the county line between Brooks and Thomas counties, with 622 residents in the 2020 census. Georgia 122 runs through the center, and the road out of town becomes County Line Road toward Barwick and Boston. The split reaches into daily services: residents fall into two school districts, while a Thomas County Public Library branch gives the city a shared institution. Pavo's name also carries a built-in bit of wordplay.

The community was first called McDonald, but mail confusion with McDonough led to a new name honoring early postmaster Duncan D. Peacock. Pavo is the Latin word for peacock, and the city celebrates that connection each May with Peacock Day, a civic-club festival and parade. Pavo also appeared in Alan Jackson's “Little Man” music video, whose black-and-white main-street scenes turned the town's storefronts into part of a national small-town portrait. Pavo is a South Georgia city where a county line, a peacock, a library, and a country song all meet on the same short stretch of highway.
