Pavo, GA

Pavo is a quiet South Georgia town of around 600 people, sitting along Highway 122 between Thomasville and Moultrie. One practical detail for newcomers is that the line between Thomas and Brooks counties runs straight through town. Depending on which side of the border you settle on, your address determines your school district and county services, though neighbors on both sides share the local library branch.

The town's unusual name has a fun backstory. Originally called McDonald, frequent mail mix-ups with McDonough prompted residents to rename the community after early postmaster Duncan Peacock. They chose Pavo, the Latin word for peacock, and the town still celebrates that connection every May with the annual Peacock Day parade and festival. Country music fans might also recognize Pavo's brick storefronts from Alan Jackson's "Little Man" music video, which was filmed right along the main street.
