Payne, OH

Payne is a Paulding County village that began as Flatrock City, laid out in 1872 before taking its current name. The 2020 census counted 1,192 residents. State Routes 49, 500, and 613 meet in the village, and Norfolk Southern still crosses through, so the local layout keeps one foot in the railroad era and one in the regional road network. The village sits seven miles from State Route 24 and nine from State Route 30, giving it a clear highway connection to the rest of northwest Ohio.

Main Street is where the everyday pieces stack up: Payne Public Library, the village park, The Rock youth center, Payne Elementary, the post office, water and sewer offices, and fire and EMS services. A 2024 park grant added outdoor exercise equipment and supported a pavilion, alongside plans for connecting walking paths. Veteran banners and a memorial project add civic memory to the same small street grid.
