Peggs, OK

Peggs had 789 residents in 2020, in a stretch of Cherokee County where Oklahoma State Highway 82 connects the community with Tahlequah and Locust Grove. The post office opened on December 6, 1899, and the place was named for Thomas Pegg, who served as acting principal chief of the Cherokee Nation during the Civil War. Cherokee and Muscogee ties remain part of the local story, and many residents are Native American.

The town also carries the memory of a disaster that changed it forever. A tornado in 1920 killed 71 people, roughly a third of those living there at the time, and an EF2 tornado damaged the area again in 2019. Peggs Public School serves elementary grades, while portions of the community fall within Locust Grove’s PK–12 district. A senior center, post office, and three small stores form much of the day-to-day commercial life along the highway. The short drive to Tahlequah brings county services and the larger Cherokee Nation community into the picture, while Locust Grove lies in the other direction.
